The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Tuesday abruptly canceled an online briefing with school superintendents, and their association called on the agency and the White House to clarify federal guidance for schools struggling amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Daniel A. Domenech, executive director of AASA, The School Superintendents Association, told POLITICO that superintendents are feeling "total confusion" with the conflicting statements issued earlier by the CDC and then on Monday from the White House. The CDC on Sunday recommended avoiding gatherings of 50 people, making it clear that didn't apply to schools, and the White House changed that to 10 on Monday. School leaders are trying to figure out what that means for school closings.

"Now consider you're a superintendent and you're running a school system, and you have thousands of kids that are coming together. Well, what does that mean?" Domenech asked. "If you're advising groups of 10 or larger for not coming together, what are you supposed to do when you have thousands of kids in a school building? Certainly more than 10 in any classroom?"
