The Chase Freedom® 5% back bonus categories for the second quarter of 2020 are out. From April 1 through June 30, 2020, you'll get 5% cash back (5x Chase Ultimate Rewards points) at grocery stores and gym memberships and fitness clubs when you activate the bonus. If you spend the $1,500 maximum in this quarter's bonus categories, you'll earn $75 (7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points).
One nice feature of this bonus is that you can start buying your groceries right now and if you forget to activate the bonus until later that's not a problem. As long as you activate the bonus by June 14, 2020, any qualifying purchases you've made since April 1 will earn 5% back.
Update: In light of the fact that many of us are stuck at home, select streaming services have been added as an additional bonus category for this quarter.
Information for the Chase Freedom and Ink Business Preferred cards has been collected independently by Million Mile Secrets and has not been reviewed by the card issuer. The way the Chase Freedom's bonus categories work is simple, you'll earn the 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in those categories each quarter you activate. Chase has added a tracker for your bonus categories (check online to see it) so it's easy to see how far along you are to maximizing your bonus.
This quarter it should be easy to max out the bonus with grocery store spending alone since it comes out to $500 a month in purchases. And if you have any of the following streaming services, be sure to pay them with your Freedom card:
To earn the 5% back for the above streaming services you'll need to pay for the subscription directly and not as part of a bundled service. To learn more about this card read our full Chase Freedom review.
You can activate the Q2 bonuses categories here. As long as you activate the bonus categories no later than June 14, 2020, you'll still earn the 5% back on all the qualifying purchases you've made in the second quarter.
Chase Freedom's quarterly bonus categories are a terrific way to earn cash back in the form of Chase Ultimate Rewards points that can be transferred to travel partners if you have the Ink Business Preferred Credit Card, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. That's because you can pool your chase points onto one of the Chase credit cards that enables transfers to airline and hotel partners.
If you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can pool your points on that card, which are then worth 1.5 cents each toward travel booked through the Chase Travel Portal. So that extra $300 in cash back you can earn each year if you max out all the bonus categories could be used to pay for $450 in flights, rental cars or hotels.
