Chris Harris Jr. Says Tyrann Mathieu 'Recruiting Me Hard' to Join Chiefs

Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. said Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu reached out to him with free agency set to begin Wednesday.

Harris, who noted he's also spoken with players from the Houston Texans, told TMZ Sports in an interview released Saturday that Mathieu has put on the full-court press.

"[He says] just come up there, man," Harris said. "Play with him, be able to do what I've done in the past-play everywhere on the field, and also play with a great quarterback!"

He added: "I'm really just looking for the best situation. Of course, you want a team that's going to pay you and appreciate you, one, and then also how they're going to use me."

The 30-year-old Oklahoma native is set to become one of the most coveted players on the free-agent market. He earned four Pro Bowl appearances and three All-Pro selections across nine years with the Broncos.

He's coming off a 2019 campaign where he registered 56 total tackles, six passes defended and an interception in 16 games for Denver, where he signed as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas in 2011.

The reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs already featured one of the league's best pass defenses. They ranked eighth in both passing yards allowed per game (221.4) and passing touchdowns allowed (21). They also racked up 16 interceptions, tied for the fifth-highest total.

Kansas City does have a need at the position with four of its cornerbacks from 2019, including starter Bashaud Breeland, set to become free agents next week.

Harris makes sense as a proven veteran who could step right in to the Chiefs lineup as they look to build a dynasty during quarterback Patrick Mahomes' peak years.

K.C. figures to face plenty of competition if it does make a push for the Super Bowl 50 champion, though. The Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers are among the other squads that will be looking to upgrade at corner this offseason.
