M3GAN in Blumhouse's horror film of the same name.

The first trailer for M3GAN was released by Universal in October of this year. Universal spent weeks making sure that people knew about the movie from Akela Cooper, James Wan, and Housebound director.

At the end of the day, all that hard work paid off and M3GAN is doing better than expected. The majority of the film's earnings are in the US. North American metrics have it at $30.2 million, well above the $17-20 million expectations. The film made its money back and then some, despite the fact that it has only been seen by international audiences. It is the first movie in over a decade to open in the first week of January and earn over $30 million domestically, and the last film to do so was The Devil Inside.

The movie earned an extra 45 million dollars over the weekend, bringing its global total to over $1 billion. Universal has been going out of its way to market this thing via social media, so it is still a good victory for M3gan. It works to market a movie. Jim Orr said that word-of-mouth is through the roof.

The rest of M3GAN's theatrical tenure is dependent on the word of mouth. Plane and Covid will be released next week, along with Sick. The films that will be released later in the month are missing, the follow up to searching, and Teen Wolf. January is usually a dead zone for films, but this year it is anything but.
