The opening weekend of M3GAN has the numbers to prove that it is a cult classic.
The film had a production budget of $12 million and made $30 million in its opening weekend in the US. It was the biggest opening of the year. It was the biggest opening for an original horror movie. Thanks to its little menace, it has been able to hold onto the hearts of millions.
After the story of a young girl named Cady who lost her parents, M3GAN begins with Cady moving into her aunt's home. A hard-working roboticist named Gemma has been building an artificial intelligence doll that will be a protective companion for any child. When she decides to give Cady her own M3GAN doll, things are bright for a short time before M3GAN startswreaking havoc on everyone around her.
M3GAN is a perfect blend of camp and horror with the film already boasting memorable one-liners and dance numbers. With its widespread success, and almost perfect critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, it rides the bandwagon of 2022's great roster of horror and sets 2023 up as a year to celebrate even more chaotic cinema. There could be a second one.
According to reports, a M3GAN sequel is already in the works with James Wan behind the camera. In his movies, Wan likes to think of a larger world.
M3GAN's shocking ending could possibly be explained by a sequel. It is hoped that the film's box office success will lead to more M3GAN, our new queer icon that has officially taken the Babadook's crown.
