According to sources, the U.S. Soccer Federation tried to get Zidane to take over as head coach.

The Frenchman was asked by his agent if he would be interested in succeeding Berhalter.

The 1998 World Cup winner, who turned 50 last June, has been without a club since the end of his second stint in charge of Real Madrid in the summer of 2021.

It won't be with the U.S. team, nor will it be with the national teams of Brazil or Portugal, who were interested in him.

The federation announced this week that assistant coach Anthony Hudson would take charge of the USMNT in their upcoming games against Serbia and Colombia.

The U.S. Soccer has commissioned an investigation into a domestic violence incident that took place in 1991.

Berhalter said in a statement that he kicked his partner during an argument when they were together.

Danielle Reyna said Wednesday that she had disclosed the incident to the U.S. Soccer organization.

What it means for soccer in the U.S.

After the conclusion of the external law firm's investigation and U.S. Soccer's own internal review, Berhalter could be rehired as coach.

Speaking Thursday, Berhalter said he was still interested in continuing as coach.

"It's about being able to take that next step and the next step is doing something that no U.S. team has ever done and that's get to the semifinals and see what happens from there."

Canada and Mexico will join the US in hosting the World Cup.
