Step up to the bar when you don't know what you want

If the bar is busy and you have to wait to order your drink, it's a good idea to figure out what you're going to order.

If you turn around and ask your friends what they want, you'll lose your spot in line. They do not have time for that.

Assume a bartender's gender or sexuality

It's a good way to get ignored for the rest of the night.

You will be aware if they want to flirt with you. Let's make it professional.

Order a drink without an ID

You don't have your ID because of a story.

A bartender doesn't want to risk their job or face legal trouble just to help you.

Ask the bartender to play your music

The bar doesn't want to hear your music if there isn't a karaoke machine.

Don't ask the bartender to change anything. They are not DJs.

Alter special cocktails on the menu

Do it at home if you want to make your own cocktails.

The cocktail is sent back nine times out of 10. You can just order a drink and it will sound good to you.

Tell the bartender your first name for your tab

Give the bartender your last name when you're asked what the name on your tab is.

You think you're the only one in this place.

Rely on the bartender to remember your drink order

You may be getting them confused with the other bartender.

It is better if you know your own order.

Waste time by asking 'What do you have?'

Do you want me to list everything we have? There is a bar.

Asking what pilsners and gins you have is fine. If we have to help you figure out what you like to drink, that helps us narrow it down a bit.

Take up more space than you need

People are at the bar.

Don't lean over or leave your trash on the patio. Don't leave a trail of dirty glasses behind you, just bring your empty glass with you when you come up for your next drink.

The bartender can spend more time making drinks if they don't have to clean up after you.

Leave only a verbal tip

They don't pay the bills because they like to be praised.

We work for money. Show them a big tip if you think they're the best in town.
