The men's basketball games at River Forest College were canceled after five players were hospitalized.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Steve Kollar was temporarily removed from his position at the university.
The athletic director sent a letter to parents explaining what happened after the team played two games. The team was put through a high-intensity, collegiate-level circuit training on New Year's Eve.
Some have claimed that the intensity and difficulty of Saturday's practice was a result of players breaking curfew.
It wasn't known if any players were still in the hospital. An email was sent to a department spokesman.
"Our athletics program has zero tolerance for harassment or reprisals of any kind, and reporting mechanisms are in place for students, coaches and related staff," Gnan wrote.
The games were to be played on Tuesday and Saturday.
