An artificial intelligence-based legal advisor is going to play the role of a lawyer for the first time. According to a report initially from New Scientist, the artificial intelligence company DoNotPay will use an earpiece to coach a courtroom client on what to say to get out of a speeding charge.
The speeding ticket hearing will take place in a U.S. courtroom in February, according to DoNotPay's founder and CEO. The company wouldn't give any further case details to protect the privacy of the defendants
DoNotPay is reticent to reveal case details because they are likely to violate courtroom laws and protocol. Courts all over the world ban phones and internet connected devices. The company is able to get around restrictions on phone usage by using accessibility standards in the court. The court won't be aware of the assistance during the hearing.
The company is working with a U.S. based speeding ticket case that will go to trial, according to the CEO. DoNotPay is considering the use of a teleprompter or a synthetic voice. He doesn't worry about legal repercussions because "at the end of the day, it's a traffic ticket." Courts don't expect to come down hard on speeding defendants because the law doesn't have explicit provisions. He said that they like to take risks.
DoNotPay will take responsibility for fines from both cases, and the company will compensate the two defendants who participated in the experiment. He explained that the company has trained its artificial intelligence to not lie or stray beyond the facts, hopefully eliminating the possibility of a perjury charge.
In 2015, DoNotPay was created to help users navigate bureaucratic and legal issues. The bot was a success in its early days. DoNotPay was able to get rid of 160,000 parking tickets in two years. The company claims to have solved 2 million cases. The company shifted its focus to artificial intelligence in 2020.
