Marcus was involved in all three of the goals, first crossing for Antony to score at the back post and then forcing an own- goal from Coady. He found the net with a late penalty for the fifth game in a row.

Frank Lampard's team thought they had equalized for a second time after Dominic Calvert-Lewin's goal was ruled out for being in an area that wasn't clearly marked, but MarcusRashford made the game safe in the last minute.

Rapid reaction

1. Ten Hag is up for the Cup

It has become a feature of Ten Hag's first season that he doesn't take any game lightly, and the same respect has been given to the Carabao Cup and the Europa League.

Before the end of January, United have two big games against Manchester City andArsenal to play in order to try and win the title. That didn't stop Ten Hag from picking a strong team againstEverton, and it will almost certainly be the same when Charlton Athletic visit Old United on Tuesday.

Anthony Martial, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Raphael Varane, and De Gea all started. It worked out well.

Since the World Cup ended, Casemiro has started each of United's five games. He's probably the one player Ten Hag can't do without because there is no natural replacement in the squad, but the fact that Casemiro started againstEverton three days after playing 90 minutes against Bournemouth shows how much he wants a trophy.

2. Antony: Good or bad?

There is a debate going on about Antony, who is still very young in his career. There has been a void on the right side of the front three for years and the Brazilian has filled it.

Sometimes he frustrates the fans when he tries to cut inside onto his stronger left foot. He doesn't trust himself on his weaker side so he doesn't touch the ball with his right hand. It is an area of his game that needs to be improved. The young man has time to do it.

It took United a long time to get Antony away from Amsterdam. It's not his fault that he commanded a 100 million transfer fee and that United were willing to pay it, but it also shapes his performances. The debate wouldn't be so intense if the transfer fee had been 50m.

3. Everton show much-needed spirit

Even though they bowed out of the FA Cup in the first round, there was still a bit of fight in the way they bowed out. The performance was much better than it was in the home defeat to the Seagulls. It's possible that the big games bring the best out of the players after the draw at Manchester City on New Year's Eve and the horror shows against Wolves and Seagulls.

The next two games are crucial for the future of Lampard. They should have enough to pick up points and move themselves out of the bottom three if they can show the same spirit that they did at Old United. Losing to bottom-of-the-table Saints at home on January 14 could cost him his job. He can be happy with parts of the performance against United, but he needs to replicate it when the pressure is on in the league.

All things considered, it was perfect for Coady.

After the match: What the players/managers said

It's probably the best that I've been, so I feel good on the pitch, I'm getting into positions and areas to score goals." I will keep scoring if I keep creating chances.

MarcusRashford was probably the difference. It's possible for a top individual talent to do that to you.
