German digital director warns Elon Musk against misinformation on Twitter

Musk met with Germany's digital director to talk about the country's expectations for misinformation on the platform. The meeting in San Francisco was arranged by representatives of the German Embassy with very little notice.

Before going to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the minister met with Musk in California. The Digital Service Act (DSA), which was passed in April of last year by all 27 member states of the European Union, was discussed during the meeting.

The DSA was introduced by the EU in order to protect children. When the DSA was passed, the EU member states warned that the changes would be implemented on major platforms by the summer.

The EU commissioner who oversaw the legislation told Musk in April that he had a lot of work to do.

The Digital Services Act will set a worldwide standard for content regulation and the protection of users from online harms, according to a technology lawyer at Linklaters.

The meeting comes after Musk reinstated the accounts of thousands of individuals who had previously been suspended for going against the company's various policies, including those banning the spreading false information, making harmful or offensive comments, and spreading antisemitic or racist views.

The covid-19 misinformation policy that was put in place during the early days of the Pandemic will no longer be enforced byTwitter.

The German ministry said in an email to Gizmodo that they are keeping a close eye on the changes at the social network. She said that the Federal Minister made it clear in his talks with Musk that Germany expects the existing voluntary commitments against disinformation to be observed in the future.

The company no longer has a communications department so it didn't respond immediately.

All companies need to be held accountable for the content that is shared on their platforms if they want to take action against illegal content.

The spokesman wouldn't comment on Musk's statements during the meeting, but he did say that it was spoken very openly and at length. She said, "Elon Musk has promised that he will comply with the commitments and future rules of the DSA."
