A company best known for its affordable TVs is trying to establish a foothold in the virtual reality and augmented reality space. The Ray Neo X2 is a pair of augmented reality smart glasses that can translate conversations in real time.
The RayNeo X2s were on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The X2s are larger than regular glasses frames. They're powered by some decent hardware that's used in the headset.
If you have bad vision, you can get fitted with prescription inserts.
If you tap on the right temple, you can navigate through the X2's menu and use its translation feature, which can translate text you're looking at, but not live. Stein said he was able to understand someone speaking to him in Chinese.
The TCL augmented reality glasses can translate literally right before your eyes. They’re also far too big for my head and with a fringe AND a mask, I look just a tad silly. Still super cool #CES2023 pic.twitter.com/KXsdIntPol

The size of the glasses indicates that they have a way to go before you don't feel silly wearing them. It's a little worrying that a company that specializes in displays can't get its own small.
That doesn't seem to be a problem for the prototype augmented reality glasses that have a live translation feature. The X2s are more feature-packed and can capture images. It's possible that the ideal sweet spot for augmented reality is not having the glasses do everything, but just having them be good at a few things.
The glasses will be available to developers by the end of the first quarter and will be available to consumers by July.
