It was the first time in decades that IBM didn't claim the most US patents in a year.

In an interview, the head of IBM Research said that the decline was the result of a strategy shift begun in 2020 to focus the intellectual property portfolio on IBM's core businesses and free engineers from the time- consuming patent process. We decided to no longer pursue numerical patent leadership, but still have one of the strongest portfolios in the world in priority technologies.

Patents have been filed in China for a long time. We expect the numbers to increase here as more of these companies do business in the US.
