It was announced for the Mercedes models in 2021. In-car demos are one of the things the company is showing off at this year's Consumer Electronics Show. We had our first listening session in the back of a car.
Let's talk about the car first. Six of the 30 speakers in the Burmester 4D sound system are in the ceiling of this May car. Think of those as upfiring drivers. Both front and trunk-mounted subs have their own 400 watt amplifier. The setup in the $185,000 car is insane.
The sound is so good that it upstages the setting. It's great for pop tunes like The Weeknd, but it's also great for jazz and other musical genres. It was like I was in a club when I listened to "So What" from Kind of Blue. The drums were to my right in the back of the car. It felt like sitting in the middle of all the musicians. I was surprised by the results of the tests I've done. This is a crazy sound system in a high-end luxury car, and it's probably the best version of the Dolby automotive collaboration.
The majority of the material is audio. You're all set if you link your streaming service with the one that offers spatial audio. All of the compatible tunes were labeled as to which they were, in the May car. There are some companies that offer a/v uses, so if you have an in-car setup, you can use movies and shows with immersive audio. John Couling, the company's senior vice president of entertainment, said during the demo that he expected people to watch movies while their EV was charging.
The audio platform can be configured for more run-of-the-mill speaker setup in more affordable cars because it was designed to beScalable from the beginning. Four-channel, six-speaker arrangements are being discussed. It wasn't long ago that Atmos was only available for premium soundbars, now it's also available on things like the Sonos Beam. Immersive audio won't be out of the question even if a family car doesn't have overhead speakers. I'm curious to hear what a virtualized version of Atmos sounds like in a Honda Civic.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, as well as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, are all equipped with Dolby Atmos. The EX90 SUV will be the first vehicle to feature the sound system from Bowers & Wilkins. The Volvo EV will be the first car in the world to have a Bose sound system. The Polestar 3 is due to arrive later this year and comes with an Atmos setup. A 25-speaker system is included in the Plus pack. The Eletre EV, which is due to debut in 2024, will be the first to feature the Atmos setup.
