A Border Patrol agent wearing body armor was hit by gunfire but avoided serious injury while confronting the people in a vehicle suspected of being a migrant smuggler. Customs and Border Protection took six people into custody after the vehicle crashed. The agent was shot multiple times and was released after a medical examination, according to the agency. A vehicle sped away from a rural state highway after the officer returned fire. Six people were taken into custody after the vehicle they were in was involved in a roll over accident. Two of those in custody were taken to a trauma center for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known. The FBI and New Mexico State Police were involved in the investigation. Recent weeks have seen increased scrutiny of immigration and border enforcement. On Thursday, Joe Biden said he would visit the U.S. border with Mexico. He is going to Mexico City next week to meet with leaders of Mexico and Canada. Cubans, Haitians, and Nicaraguans who cross the border from Mexico illegally will be turned away immediately, according to Biden.
