According to Magic Johnson, he told King James that he wanted to sign Leonard to build a championship team.

James joined the Lakers in the year after Johnson joined. Leonard was a free agent after leading the Toronto Raptors to a title in 2019.

When Johnson stepped down, the situation changed. Leonard signed with the Clippers over the Lakers, but Johnson thinks things would have been different if he was still in charge.

The Hall of Famer said that he would have had him. It's done when I come in to close it.

The Lakers won a championship after acquiring Anthony Davis in a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans, but the deal has hurt the team in the long run.
