The glass covering the phone's rear camera is shattering despite the phone not being knocked or dropped. The damage to the phones has been reported since November, just a month after the phone went on general sale.
There are photos posted on social media showing the issue with the phones. Some owners say they're being quoted up to $400 to fix the damage, while others say they're being told to pay $200 to $300.
There isn't a lot of information about what's causing the breaks. Users say they discovered the cracked glass after taking the phone to a cold place. One person says they found it after going from a 16 degree Celsius room outside where it was -2 degrees, while another person says they found the glass shattered after walking in -15 degrees Celsius.
During a cold snap last week, I took out my phone and took a picture of the dog. I wiped the camera lens off because I noticed a lot of glare and reflections. There were shards of glass in my pocket. They refuse to do anything about it. The phone can't be warrantied because of the physical damage
It is an unfortunate issue for a pair of phones that were otherwise solid improvements over their predecessors when we reviewed them last October. My colleague Allison wrote that the Pixel 7 is a great deal for someone who wants a flagship phone but doesn't pay flagship prices. The 7 Pro is a good option for someone who doesn't want the excess of the S22 Ultra. There was no sign of the slow fingerprint scanning seen in the new phone.
