Two years of criticism about the practicality and safety of the racing-style yoke steering has led to the re-introduction of a round steering wheel for the Model S and Model X vehicles. The online configurator for the Model S/X has an option for a round steering wheel. The rounded wheel option doesn't affect the price or delivery time. The Model 3 and Model Y have a steering wheel.
The steering wheel and control stalks were removed from the Model S and Model X in favor of a single yoke option. Some people thought the yoke was a safety risk, but others thought it was a good idea for a clearer view of the dashboard.
The yoke was praised for its handling abilities and space-saving design. Brownlee found that the touch controls were unreliable and that the buttons were unresponsive. Sometimes I will try to press all over this thing and it won't work.
Musk said that the redesign was boring and blocks the screen. It looks better with a yoke. Customers requested a rounded wheel option for the Model S and Model X in 2021.
The rounded wheel option on the site doesn't seem to show control stalks returning with it. The buttons on the wheel are the same as those on the yoke.
