The former football player died of cancer at the age of 58.

He was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer twice in the next two years.

He passed away last night, surrounded by his family, after five years of illness.

Many people have supported him over the years. He and his example will stay in our hearts forever.

He left his role with the national team in December in order to be treated for cancer, but he was part of the coaching staff that led Italy to Euro 2020 success.

"I know that I probably will not die of old age, I hope to live as long as possible, but I feel more fragile than before," she said in the documentary.

He hoped cancer would leave him in peace after he had tested his abilities.

He said eloquence can teach a lot about who you are and push you to go beyond the superficial way in which we live.

Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian Football Federation, said "Gianluca was a wonderful person and leaves an unfillable void in the national team and everyone who appreciated his extraordinary human qualities."

He was a young player with Cremonese in the third and second tiers.

He moved to Sampdoria in 1984 and helped the club win three Italian Cup in a row. Sampdoria defeated Anderlecht 2-0 in 1990 to win the European Cup.

In 1991, he scored 19 goals for Sampdoria, which was the first and only title they ever won.

After a slow start, he rediscovered his goal- scoring touch and helped the Bianconeri win the Italian league in 1995 and the European league the following season.

After two years as player manager, he became player manager again, this time after the dismissal of the Dutch man who had hired him.

Two years after winning the FA Cup, he was dismissed, as were the League Cup and Cupwinner's Cup.

You'll be missed by so many. A legend to us and to all of football.
