The Wolf Moon is the first full moon of the year. The moon will be on the far side of Earth and at its farthest from the sun, making it a micromoon.
The Wolf Moon will be visible for most of the night after the full moon sets. The Wolf Moon will rise in New York City at 3:21pm. You can see it at 7:26 am on the day.
The moon will be in the sky at the time of the Wolf Moon.
The next full moon can be seen in 2023.
When the moon is farthest from the sun, it will be known as the Full Wolf Moon.
In the Sky shows Earth's distance from the sun as around 14 million km. Around 400,000 km is the distance between the Earth and the moon.
When the moon is close to the Earth, a micro moon is called a super moon. There are times when the moon is close to Earth and times when it is farther away.
The difference between the moon's size and brightness is so small that it's almost invisible to the naked eye.
The Wolf Moon was named after it being seen at times of the year when wolves could be heard outside villages.
How the full moon names came to be is explained in more detail.
The "Old Moon," the "Frost Moon" and the "Snow Moon" are alternative names for the January full moon. February's full moon is known as the "snow moon" and will occur on Feb. 5, 2023.
