As violence engulfed the city where the operation took place, the military arrested the alleged leader of a major drug organization.
The Defense Minister said that one of the sons of El Chapo was captured in Culiacan early Thursday and was taken to Mexico City. In four states and in the northwest of the country, he said, he was a source of violent crime.
According to local media, there were riots, shootings and loot after the military operation. A police officer died in the operation and 27 people were injured, most of them police and members of the military, according to the governor of the state. He said that the situation was under control.

The National Guard and the Defense Ministry are in charge of the Culiacan airport after flights were suspended. At the nearby airport, operations were stopped. Aeromexico said one of its planes was hit by a bullet at the Culiacan airport, causing it to cancel flights to and from Los Mochis.
The U.S. Department of State has an international arrest warrant for Ovidio Guzman. Up to $5 million is offered for information leading to his arrest or conviction. He was turned over to Mexico's federal prosecutor.
