The camera app for Mac and PCs will be shutting down. You might remember it as the program that let you apply silly filters to your face while you were on a video conference call. Billy Disney pointed out that a boss accidentally showed up to a work meeting in 2020 as a potato.
On its support page, the company said that it would no longer be available to use or download. It is not the same as being able to show up to your next standup using the dog filter on the web version of the app.
The company pitched the invention of the snap camera as a way to liven up their streams. It came into its own as the Pandemic started, when many people suddenly found themselves in video calls all day, and got tired of staring at a version of themselves they didn't like. Since then, the company has laid off 20 percent of its employees and canceled projects.
There was no reply to the request for comment on why the camera was being discontinued. It may be that it is no longer as important as it used to be. Video chat apps have also been building in their own filters as companies have returned to in-person work. On Thursday it was announced that it would be adding human avatars as well as allowing you to dress up as an animal. It might be too early to compare the features.
