Chris Beard was fired by the University of Texas. The removal of Beard came nearly a month after he was arrested on domestic violence charges. Beard and his fiancée got into an argument in which Beard is said to have bit her and left her with injuries. Beard is facing a third degree domestic violence charge in the state of Texas. The case is still pending and Beard hasn't been indicted.

The Longhorns didn't have to pay Beard the rest of his base salary because they fired him with cause. Texas doesn't have to pay for Beard's contract incentives which could total more than $1 million per season.

It has been a difficult situation for us to work through. The University of Texas decided to fire Mr. Beard immediately, according to a statement from the vice president and athletics director. We would like to thank Coach Terry for his leadership at a time when our team needed it the most. He will continue to be the acting head coach for the rest of the season.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that Beard was given the chance to resign. Beard had not been paid since his arrest. After posting bail, he was released from the jail. In April 2021, Beard was hired as the Longhorns' head coach, coming from Texas Tech, where he led the Red Raiders to a national championship.
