The school told Beard's attorney on Thursday that he is "unfit" for the job because of the domestic violence charge.
Beard had five years left on a seven-year guaranteed contract that included a provision that he could be fired if he was charged with a felony or committed other behavior unbecoming of his position.
If Beard is found guilty of assault by strangulation/suffocation family violence, he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
School officials said there was an internal investigation into Beard's suspension.
The university's vice president of legal affairs, Jim Davis, wrote in a letter to Beard's attorney that Beard's behavior made him unsuitable to serve as head coach at our university. Whether prosecutors continue with the case will not affect whether Beard engaged in conduct unbecoming of the school.
Beard was arrested after police responded to an emergency call at his house.
The Associated Press does not typically identify alleged victims of extreme violence, but Trew issued a public statement in December denying that she had told police Beard had choked her. She said she didn't want him to be arrested or prosecuted.
Trew said in her statement that Chris did not choke her. I don't deny that Chris acted in self-defense. I don't think Chris was trying to hurt me.
Trew didn't address why she made the emergency call or other details in the police report, such as bite marks and abrasions on her face.
Minton pointed to Trew's statement in a letter sent early Thursday to the university in which he urged it to keep Beard.
According to Minton, Beard has not done anything to violate his contract with the University of Texas.
Minton's letter said that the Texas athletic director has told the team that Beard is innocent. Beard was told to either resign or be fired.
According to the school's letter, Mr. Beard doesn't understand the significance of the behavior he knows he engaged in, or the events that impair his ability to effectively lead our program.
Mr. Beard is unsuitable to serve as a head coach at our university because of his lack of self-awareness.
Trew initially told police that she and Beard had an argument where she broke his glasses and he snapped on her. According to the police report, Trew said that Beard grabbed her, bit her, and threw her around.
The district attorney's office hasn't responded to previous requests for comment on Beard's case or if Trew's statement would affect how prosecutors proceed with the felony charge. Online records show a court hearing in January.
The expectation was that Beard would lift his alma mater to the same level of excellence as he did at Texas Tech. He led the Longhorns program to a 6-0 start and a ranking as high as second.
Terry will remain acting head coach through the rest of the season according to Del Conte.
"We would like to thank Coach Terry for his exemplary leadership both on and off the court at a time when our team needed it most." The Longhorns are proud of their student-athletes, coaches and staff who have continued to make them proud.
After winning their first five games under Terry, the Longhorns lost to Kansas State on Tuesday.
Beard returned to Texas Tech as head coach in 2016 after 10 years as an assistant.
He was named The Associated Press coach of the year as he guided Texas Tech to a 31-7 finish and lost in the national championship game.
Texas Tech officials were not happy about his departure for Texas, which included a McDonald's breakfast an hour's drive north of Lubbock.
As soon as he arrived in Austin, Beard set out to rebuild a program from the ground up, changing the roster and trying to whip up new enthusiasm for the program as he engaged with students. He led Texas to a first-round victory over Virginia Tech that was the Longhorns' first NCAA Tournament win in four years.
That's right.
