In 2002, Minaya became the first Latino general manager of a baseball team.
Brian Sabean joined the Yankees on Tuesday as an executive adviser to general manager Brian Cashman.
Minaya's teams failed to make the playoffs in each of his three years as GM, but he was known for bringing in high-profile players. During his time with the Mets, he acquired a number of players.
The farm system was built with the help of the GM.
The Mets rehired Minaya as a special assistant to the general manager in 2017.
He was given an ambassadorship position in order to reach out to the Latino community.
