Many Newark-area flyers have been waiting for the opening of the airport's new Terminal A.

The first flights are going to operate from the new facility that day.

Newark Liberty International Airport is managed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The Port Authority is pleased to announce that the first flights in and out of Newark Liberty’s new, world-class Terminal A will commence on January 12th. We look forward to welcoming passengers to this magnificent, state-of-the-art facility, where they will enjoy best-in-class functionality, inspiring public art, delicious local concessions, and a transformative experience from curb to gate.

We don't know which flights will be the first to arrive and depart from the new facility, but we will update this story with more information as it becomes available.

The Newark Terminal A was supposed to be open in December. Last-minute issues with the facility's fire alarm and security systems caused the opening to be delayed.

The Port Authority is making good on its promise to open in early January.

If the terminal opened just days before the busiest holiday travel season on record, it would cause more disruption, but it will likely be less.

Only select flights will be allowed in Terminal A. The Port Authority didn't say when each airline would complete its move, and it's not known which United flights will operate from the new facility.

Delta will be moving into the new facility later this year when a 12-gate expansion opens.

Twenty-one of the terminal's gates will be operational at the beginning. Any airline can theoretically use any of the gates within the terminal if they choose to.

Newark has been considered to be one of the worst airports in the country due to the fact that it has only one terminal. The new facility is the largest investment in New Jersey by the Port Authority.

It will be the biggest passenger-facing upgrade yet for Newark, and it will be a huge improvement over the outdated Terminal A.

The new facility is poised to bring a number of improvements to the passenger experience despite the delay.

There is an overhauled and modernized check-in experience with centralized security, new spacious gate areas and other flyer friendly amenities.
