There are a lot of smart home gadgets being shown at the Consumer Electronics Show, but I am most excited about the idea of lawn care. Smart irrigation gadgets that can be used to remotely control watering locations and frequency in your yard, helps to keep plants healthy while reducing water waste, and is being released by two companies. One of them requires you to have an expensive irrigation system.
The Smart Water Network, a system of products designed to control and monitor water usage, is being expanded with a new sprinkler controller and wireless soil sensor. The Smart Sprinkler Controller can be installed onto an existing irrigation system in less than 30 minutes, with no mention of compatibility restrictions. Unfortunately, this system isn't compatible with Matter, but it can be integrated with other digital assistants.
Users can monitor water usage and estimated savings as well as set up customized watering schedules and enable seasonal features such as weather skip, which uses local weather data to disabling your sprinklers when rain is predicted in the area It is worth noting that most irrigation systems offer similar features these days, but the Moen Smart Sprinkler Controller can be monitored and operated via a smartphone app instead of just the unit itself.
If you have plants with variable watering requirements, it can be used in eight- and 16-zone models. The price for the smart sprinkler controller is $179.99.
I don't like keeping plants alive and healthy. I am too neglectful with my watering habits and rarely nail how much of the stuff they need, so I am interested in the Moen Smart Wireless Soil Sensor. These can be used to detect soil temperature between a depth of one and five inches and transmit that information to the smart sprinkler controller to adjust watering schedules in areas where more or less water is required.
You don't need to dig trenches in your lawn to run cables, and they should sit flush to ground level, so you don't have to use gardening tools to get them. The sensor has a battery that can last up to six years. The price for the Moen Smart Wireless Soil Sensor is $70.
The latest gizmo from Rachio is for those of us who still rely on our hose to water our lawns. The smart hose timer is for people who don't already have expensive irrigation systems. It is a cheaper option that connects directly to an outdoor faucet, hose, or drip system. The smart hose timer can be used to create watering schedules on a day by day basis. The timer can be instructed to skip watering based on real-time rain data for each scheduled watering session rather than the entire day, ensuring other sessions aren't unnecessarily skipped. The smart hose timer will be available in March of 2023.
