The news that Amazon planned to lay off 10,000 of its employees in November was bad, but today it got worse.
In a note from CEO Andy Jassy published on Thursday, Amazon announced that it will "eliminate additional roles" meaning a total of over 18,000 employees will be terminated.
The uncertain economy has made this year's review more difficult. In November, we communicated the hard decision to eliminate a number of positions across our Devices and Books businesses and also announced a voluntary reduction offer for some employees in our People, Experience, and Technology organization. I told you that we weren't done with our annual planning process and that there would be more role reductions early in the future.
The decision to eliminate additional roles is a difficult one.
There have been a lot of layoffs at technology companies. Roughly 13 percent of Facebook's workforce was laid off in November, while half of its employees were asked to return to work.
It didn't end there. The latest news from Amazon shows that the pain isn't over yet, despite the fact that many tech companies have announced layoffs in the last two years.
