More than 18,000 jobs will be eliminated at Amazon, extending a previously announced round of layoffs.

The number of people affected is significant, but it is just 1.2% of Amazon's global workforce.

In a memo to employees early this morning, Andy Jassy said that in addition to the roles affected in its Devices and Books businesses, the majority of the roles will be in its People, Experience, and Technology.

Layoffs continue

The news comes just a day afterSalesforce announced that it was cutting around 10% of its workforce, impacting more than 7,000 employees, and continues a trend that saw countless companies scale back their workforces to counter economic downturn. According to data from Layoffs.fyi, tech companies will cut more than 150,000 positions in the next four years.

After a Wall Street Journal report got hold of preliminary details via a leak, Amazon said that it has yet to inform those that will be impacted, but it will do so on January 18.

Jassy wrote that they usually wait to communicate about the outcomes until they can talk to the people who are directly impacted. Because one of our teammates leaked this information, we decided to let you know earlier so you can hear what I have to say.

According to Jassy, Amazon will provide a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support.
