The mother of a USA player has confirmed that she reported a coach for kicking his wife.
The USA's training camp in California later this month will not be led by Berhalter after he admitted kicking his wife as a teenager.
The governing body instigated the probe after Berhalter revealed he had been the subject of a threat to expose the incident involving his then girlfriend.
On Tuesday Berhalter posted a statement on social media that said an individual contacted U.S. Soccer during the World Cup in order to take him down.
According to Berhalter, in 1991 he kicked his wife after an argument.
I regret my actions that night and there are no excuses. The writer was Berhalter. She wanted nothing to do with me at that time.
They have been married for 25 years and have four children.
The wife of a former USA captain reported the incident to US Soccer on December 11.
Berhalter said in early December that an unnamed player was sent home from the USA camp because they didn't meet expectations.
She said that she called the U.S. Soccer sporting director, Earnie Stewart, to set the record straight after learning of the negative comments made about her son.
She said that she thought it was unfair that Gio was still being dragged through the mud when he apologized for acting immaturely.
The abuse on the night in question was minimized by Berhalter's statement. I supported my roommate through the trauma she went through. It took a long time for me to forgive and accept Gregg, but I worked hard to give him grace and make both of them and their kids a part of my family's life. I was expecting him to give the same treatment to Gio. The current situation is very hard to deal with.
Danielle Reyna insisted that she did not ask for Berhalter to be fired, and that she did not blackmail him.
I don't know anything about blackmail attempts, nor have I ever had any discussions about anyone else on Gregg's staff, so I want to be very clear.
I support my wife, Danielle, and her statement. After the U.S. was out of the World Cup, I appealed to Earnie Stewart to refrain from making any more comments, and I was also upset by the comments made by Gregg.
US Soccer said in a statement on Tuesday that they have learned about potential inappropriate behavior towards multiple members of their staff by people outside of their organization.
Our investigation has been expanded to include those allegations.
They are coming forward to talk about it. The results of the investigation will be made public when it's complete.
The US Soccer organization condemns violence of any kind.
The training camp will be led by Anthony Hudson, who was an assistant coach at the World Cup.
