A fisherman in Indiana caught a rare fish but didn't think about it until he caught another one.

On New Year's Eve, Scott Skafar set out from a marina in Indiana on his way to the lake.

He caught a burBot after fishing. According to the Illinois- Indiana Sea Grant, burbot are a type of freshwater cod fish that look like a cross between a catfish and an eel.

Skafar said he didn't think much of the first burbot, which was put in the live well for a while.

He got another burBot. He looked at the second fish and thought it was really large. He looked up the state record and weighed his catch.

Skafar said, 'Holy cow.' The record is above it.

The burbot was 7 pounds, 11 ounces, and was caught on Lake Michigan by Larry Malicki in 1990.

He said Skafar's first burbot was 9 pounds. His first fish was 10 pounds, 2 ounces.

I don't know how I got two of them larger than the current record. Skafar wanted to know. He thought the official weighing and submission process was too difficult for a holiday weekend when he wanted to just keep fishing.

Skafar took the fish to a grocery store and weighed them on a scale with a number of witnesses, frozen them and submitted them to the Department of Natural Resources.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources did not reply immediately. The department told Skafar it had everything he needed to certify his record.

Setting a new state record is rewarding for Skafar. It wasn't until I caught a state record burbot that I realized that it was a rare fish.

During the winter, burbot only come to the shore of Lake Michigan.

He said that being an avid fisherman is exciting to him, but it seems like the people around him are more excited than he is.

Skafar said that he was eager to see if he could break his own record for the most burps in a day. The record is going to be broken a lot quicker now that the ball is in motion.

It is about 40 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois, across the state border.
