Is Brock Purdy about to Wally Pipp Trey Lance?

Russell Wilson hasn't experienced many of the things the San Francisco 49ers have done. The Niners have won nine in a row and have already won the division. Brock Purdy has been the leader of that winning streak. The 49ers are getting it done with a new quarterback and they are doing it with a guy who wasn't supposed to be relevant.

Brock Purdy is making history

Only five quarterbacks in league history have won their first four starts as a rookies, and Purdy was one of them. He is in a group with names like Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Kruczek.

Only one other 49ers quarterback had won their first three starts. Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Y.A. Tittle were part of the franchise. It is remarkable for him to do what he did in the draft. He can argue that he is the best Brock in the NFL. Brock Osweiler and Brock Lesnar were busts in 2004. Brock Purdy may be the only one challenging for the title.

Purdy has been more than a game manager and should not be underestimated. He has the trust of the head coach and is making plays when needed. Even Jimmy Garoppolo has been allowed to take more chances than Purdy.

We have seen a lot of guys come in and play well in relief time and then fall back to earth. The no-name player is shuffled back into obscurity when the long-term starter returns. The Niners have a quarterback situation that has existed all year.

What about Trey Lance?

With his learning curve and bad season-ending injury, it's possible that the future of the San Francisco 49ers could be in jeopardy. Jimmy G suffered a season-ending injury and was likely on his way out of SF this summer.

Depending on how Lance looks next summer, this could be Purdy's team. Lance had a second surgery on his ankle, which kept him out of action for a while. The Niners have won four of their last five games with Purdy in charge. If he can help guide this team to another deep playoff run, along with the status of Lance and Garoppolo, he could be back as the team's quarterback.
