  • McCarthy lost another speaker ballot on Wednesday.

  • The anti-McCarthy advocates nominated Donalds.

  • McCarthy is facing a block that is trying to prevent him from getting promoted.

Kevin McCarthy lost his second-term lawmaker's vote for House speaker and then faced off against him for the up-in-the-air leadership post.

Donalds was nominated to run the chamber by Jim Jordan of Ohio, who switched things up by blocking McCarthy.

McCarthy's support was reduced by one vote due to the fact that Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz of Indiana voted present.

The anti-McCarthy camp wants to rally behind Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona and Jim Jordan of Ohio.

Donalds, who was put up for the top job by Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, lent McCarthy his support during the first two rounds of voting, but later switched sides after concluding that the badly wounded California Republican has no path to victory

McCarthy insisted that he was still the favorite among the Republican caucus despite the doomed vote.

McCarthy told congressional reporters that he had the most votes. Even though no progress was made overnight, he would keep talking with the dissenters.

The emboldened opposition group, which was so far picked up support rather than withering under pressure from McCarthy, Jordan, and former President Donald Trump, has vowed to keep on.
