Messi given guard of honour on return to PSG training (0:33)

After winning the World Cup with Argentina, Lionel Messi received a guard of honor from his teammates at Paris Saint-Germain. There is a time and a place.

7:30 AM ET

Lionel Messi returned to Paris Saint-Germain's training ground on Wednesday, 17 days after winning the World Cup with Argentina, and received a guard of honor from his teammates.

It may seem like there is no frontier left to conquer for Messi now that he has added soccer's greatest prize to his honour roll.

Messi has racked up 40 major honours in his career for club and country, but there is one outlier that remains unclaimed.

Since he turned professional almost two decades ago, Messi has only played in one major competition that he hasn't won.

The only senior competition he has yet to win is the French cup, where he lost the final to Nice on penalties.

Paris Saint-Germain are just half a dozen games away from being able to correct that wrong as they begin their 2022-23 Coupe de France campaign on Friday against La Berrichonne de Chateauroux.

Messi is just six games away from completing a clean sweep if he makes his club debut against the third tier side. In the past 12 years, Paris Saint-Germain have advanced to the final eight times and lifted the trophy 15 times.

Messi has won 11 of the 12 senior competitions he has participated in for club and country since 2004. If you include Argentina's triumph at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, the total rises to 12 of 13, though the men's football tournament is not included.

The CON MEBOL won the cup in 2021.

The first major international honour of Messi's career came at the age of 34 after he won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics. It was the talismanic forward's 34th appearance in the competition, spread over six editions of the tournament, when Argentina defeated Brazil in the final of the 2021.

The finalissima was won in 2022.

Messi played 520 times in LaLiga for Barcelona, making more appearances in the Spanish topflight than in any other competition and scoring 474 goals. He racked up 10 winner's medals in 17 seasons at Camp Nou, more than any other player. He played for Barcelona's B and C teams early in his career, but they are not considered a major competition because they are in Spain's lower league.

In the last seven years, the title has been won in the form of the Copa del Rey.

In July of last year, Messi received his second club honour with Paris Saint-Germain, as they trounced Nantes in Tel-Aviv by a score of four goals.

The title is "coup de France".

The one that got away for Messi was the French one. His only appearance in the competition was in January 2022, when Paris Saint-Germain were knocked out of the competition by Nice. The game ended goalless in regulation time and was decided by penalties, with Les Aiglons winning 5-5 in the shootout. It was Messi who scored the spot kick.
