If you bought an Apple MacBook with a bad butterfly keyboard, you may be able to claim part of a $50 million settlement. The deadline for making a claim is fast approaching and the law firm handling the settlement has been mailing class members since December.
The settlement class includes all persons and entities in the US who purchased a butterfly-equipped MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro between 2015 and 2019.
There are people in the class. Anyone who had to replace their keyboard more than once is included. The group should confirm their mailing address in order to receive their payment. The other two groups will need to submit a claim form if they replaced their whole keyboard or individual keycaps. If you replace a keyboard, you can get up to $125. Settlement payments are only available for repairs done by Apple or one of its authorized service providers.
Payments aren't expected to go out until a final approval hearing on March 16th, and payouts could be less depending on the number of class members in each category
Apple replaced the traditional scissor-switch keyboard mechanism in the MacBook with a new slimline butterfly version. MacBook owners began to notice that the keyboard had serious reliability issues, where keys could become unresponsive or sticky if the smallest amount of dust gets under the keys.
Many customers had to get individual keys or their entire MacBook keyboards replaced because of Apple's plan to ditch the keyboard in 2020. There were multiple lawsuits filed over the issues. A judge approved the settlement in November of last year.
