Gaetz was involved in derailing McCarthy's speaker bid. Gaetz rebuked the California congressman on Tuesday.

Gaetz said that if McCarthy wanted to drain the swamp, he couldn't put the biggest alligator in charge of it. I am a Florida man and I know what I say.

Gaetz said he was told not to vote for McCarthy because his committee assignments would be taken away.

Gaetz has supported other people. At the CPAC in August, Gaetz said he doesn't think McCarthy should be the GOP leader.

Gaetz and McCarthy's representatives did not reply to Insider's requests for comment.

McCarthy will need 218 votes to get the gavel. On Wednesday, voting is expected to resume.
