McCaffery will take a leave of absence to address his mental health.
McCaffery, the son of Fran McCaffery, said in a statement that he has been battling anxiety and that it has reached the point where it makes it hard for him to prepare and perform.
He doesn't think it's fair to teammates or himself to be on the court when he isn't himself. The anxiety has affected my sleep, appetite, and stamina, which has made it difficult for me to compete at my full capabilities.
McCaffery is Iowa's third-leading scorer with 12.8 points per game. In losses to Nebraska and Penn State, he shot 2 for 15 from the field and scored 8 points.
The fourth-year forward said he will return when he feels like himself.
McCaffery said the leave of absence is unrelated to his battle with cancer. When he was 13 he was diagnosed with cancer. Three months after he was diagnosed, he was cancer free.
McCaffery said in an interview last month that he had to pay attention to his nutrition and sleep habits because of the changes he had made to his metabolism.
The effects of McCaffery's son's anxiety have become more noticeable in the last couple weeks.
The coach said that everyone admires his courage and willingness to be open about the struggle. We will be with him throughout the process.
The Hawkeyes play at home against Indiana on Thursday.
