It seems that even the most accomplished tech wizards aren't immune from wallet draining hacks. One of the original core developers for Bitcoin claims that someone stole hundreds of dollars from his accounts late last year and left him without a wallet and a heart full of woe. The apparent hacking episode caused Dashjr, who has worked for the Bitcoin Project for the past twelve years, to take to social media. The developer didn't give a lot of explanation as to how this happened. After stealing Dashjr's personal coin bounty, the hacker allegedly funneled the money to another address where the assets are currently sitting. The wallet shows a total of over two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. According to Dashjr, a cybercriminal got a hold of his key, which led to a compromise of his wallet. PGP is a popular security program that protects web users from online threats. It isn't clear how a compromise of Dashjr's key would have allowed the hacking episode.
Many users on the social networking site sympathized with Dashjr and offered their sympathies. More than a few people weren't sure about the developer's claims People were confused as to how this could happen.
Is there a sense of what actually happened? One user asked Dashjr if he could share some insights that might help others.
The user questioned how the key leads to the loss of the digital currency. Dashjr said, "everything is compromised."
I don't think this is true. You are leading us to believe that you kept a lot of money on a hot wallet, and you should have some basic Op Sec.
The tax season was close by. One person accused Dashjr of perpetrating a boating accident. Boating accidents are tax avoidance schemes, in which a token holder claims to have lost their digital money to hackers but, in reality, maintains control of the funds and is just trying to avoid the snooping eyes of financial regulators. There is no evidence that Dashjr is doing this, and many details of what happened to his money are not clear.
If the developer responds, the story will be updated.
It is not as if Dashjr would be the first person to have his coinage boosted. There was no end to the financial chaos that could be caused by the criminals who targeted the industry. The incident seems to indicate that it will be the same in 2023.
