The US Soccer Federation has hired a law firm to investigate an incident of domestic violence that took place in 1991.
On Tuesday, Berhalter said in a statement that someone had contacted US Soccer with information that would "take him down" and that he had kicked his partner.
I met my soul mate in 1991. Berhalter said that he was a freshman in college when he met Rosalind. While out drinking at a local bar, I had a heated argument with another person. I kicked her in the legs.
Berhalter said that he sought counseling after the incident. They got married and have four children.
Over three decades ago, the lessons learned from that night became the foundation for a loving, devoted, and supportive relationship, which we celebrated with our 25th wedding anniversary this past weekend.
The U.S. Soccer hired a law firm to conduct an investigation into the matter.
Potential inappropriate behavior toward multiple members of our staff by individuals outside of our organization has been learned through this process. We've expanded our investigation to include those allegations.
US Soccer said that a full technical review of the men's program was ongoing and that it would announce who would lead them for an upcoming January camp and a pair of friendly matches.
The federation thanked Berhalter and his wife for coming forward and said that it condemns violence of any kind.
