Dell announced a beefed-up monitor that will allow more options for creative professionals. The Dell UltraSharp 32 6K Monitor places itself firmly in the professional category, right alongside the likes of Apple's 6K Pro Display XDR. We checked out the U3224KB in person in New York, and it had a strong contrast throughIPS Black technology, as well as built-in extras that helped it stand out. We are talking about the stand as well.

6K resolution

The U3224KB is a 31.5-inch monitor with a 60Hz refresh rate. The form factor of the monitor is based on the preference of power users in high end notebooks, according to a company spokesman. Dell wanted to use the same level of density in its 32-inch screen as it did in its other screens.

The Dell UltraSharp U3223QZ has a 149.87 ppi, but the U3224KB has a 222.79 ppi. The Dell monitor has a higher resolution than Apple's Studio Display and the Pro Display XDR monitors. Apple has a larger display at 32 inches with a slightly lower resolution of 60163384.

The U3224KB occupies an elite class of UltraSharps that go beyond Dell's typical lure of sleek designs and strong port selection. Dell says the monitor is for creators, like designers and engineers, and has more screen real estate than a 5K monitor. The vendor sees professionals using the monitor for tasks such as making fine details in illustrations andUI or working with high-resolution photos or videos while having enough room for more windows and tools.

The U3224KB faces stiff competition due to the fact that it is in a niche category.

Betting on IPS Black

Dell is betting onIPS Black, a type ofIPS- technology introduced in early 2022. 35 percent deeper black levels are claimed by theIPS Black. The U3224KB is supposed to have two times the contrast of an average monitor. A max brightness of 500 nits is claimed.

IPS Black has been relatively successful at delivering contrast and image quality that is noticeably improved from a quality monitor. Two monitors from Dell have been tested before. The UltraSharp U2723QE had a contrast of 1,873:1, while the UltraSharp U3223QZ had a contrast of 1,860:0. Content like movies and photos appear to have more depth and realism when viewed on a 4K monitor. Shadowy scenes in 4K movies had more variation in shades of gray, as well as lively looking skin tones.

We recorded a contrast of 1,040:1 with the 5K Studio Display set to 200 nits compared to 1,504:1 for the U3223 QZ and 1,760:1 for the U2723 QE.

Prosumer monitors deliver even better contrast levels than IPS Black. When testing the Pro Display XDR in SDR mode, PCMag reported an SDR contrast of 12,460:1, while MonitorNerds reported the monitor surpassed 10,000:1. There are VA monitors that deliver contrast in the 3000:1 range.

The bar for the U3224KB is higher than it is for Dell's other monitors. According to Dell, the U3224KB covers 99 percent of DCI-P3 and Apple's Display P3. 701. The company has yet to provide any color accuracy claims for the monitor, which will be important for many creatives.

Hands-on

Our time with the 6K monitor was brief, but we quickly noticed the vibrant colors and good brightness in the room. It was included when viewing the display from different sides. According to Dell's post on the U3224KB, the monitor's Black panel has a contrast ratio of more than twice that of standardIPS when viewed from a 45 degree angle.

The 4K U3223QZ has up to 41 percent deeper black levels at a 45 degree horizontal viewing angle compared to the 6K U3224KB which has a 31.5 inch screen. Dell says that anIPS Black monitor could have up to 1.2 times better color accuracy than a regularIPS monitor at that angle.
