Louisiana now requires a government ID to access Pornhub

Long-standing concerns about online privacy have been renewed by a Louisiana law that requires age verification for adult websites. Louisiana's policy requires websites with more than 30% pornographic content to verify that people are 18 or older. Porn hub requires a government-issued ID for access.

The new policy was not confirmed by PornHub, but a video was posted to the social networking site showing what users see in Louisiana. Users are asked to verify their age with AllpassTrust, which works with the LA wallet. Vice said that other adult sites like XVideos didn't seem to require verification.

It doesn't know who you are

Louisiana passed a bill last year that took effect at the start of the new century, making it the most severe step in a series of government efforts to make children safer. Legislators in several US states have declared pornography a public health crisis and some have taken symbolic steps to restrict it. There are concerns that non-pornographic sites might have to verify users' ages to comply with a California law passed in August. Age verification for adult sites at a federal level has been introduced by Senator Mike Lee.

A spokesman for LA wallet maker Envoc stated in a December article that companies like PornHub wouldn't retain users' information. It doesn't tell you your date of birth, it doesn't tell you who you are, it doesn't tell you what part of the state you're in, and it doesn't tell you anything from your device. The project manager said that the person is old enough to be allowed in. LA wallet requires a government-issued ID to create a digital license that can be used as official identification.

In the past, age verification has been a problem. It requires trusting a third-party service with sensitive information about your web browsing, and it could possibly give major companies an edge over smaller independent sites. MindGeek had concerns with its own verification service. The UK failed in its attempts to require verification on adult websites. There is currently no solution for age verification that is sufficiently reliable, comprehensive, and privacy-friendly. Users can get around bans by using a virtual private network.
