Pele's funeral: Thousands of fans bid farewell at Santos procession as Brazil legend is laid to rest

The public paid their final respects to the sporting icon after his coffin was carried through the streets of his hometown.

The procession to say farewell to the three-time World Cup winner was watched by thousands of fans.

The casket, draped in a Brazilian flag, was carried through the neighborhood by mourners.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Edson, passed away on Thursday after a battle with colon cancer.

The greatest footballer of all time has been buried in a cemetery overlooking a stadium.

In honor of his father who wore the number 9 shirt as a player, he wanted the ninth floor of the cemetery to be named after him.

After his death, Brazil observed three days of national mourning as 230,000 people lined up to view his open casket.

Some people on social media called Infantino's visit to the coffin "shameless" because he took a selfies.

Mr Infantino said in a post that he was dismayed by the criticism and that his team-mates wanted to take a photo with him.

The treatment for colon cancer has been going on for a long time. He died of multiple organ failure as a result of the cancer, according to the medical center where he had been treated.

The 'king of soccer', as he is known, played for Santos from 1955 to 1974 and scored more than 1,000 goals.
