Recent sales data shows that the Zen 4 could be in trouble. The previous- generation Zen 3 could be five times less popular than Zen 4. Zen 4 is not being bought by anyone.

The data comes from a German retailer called Mindfactory, which gives daily sales data for a range of processors. Fans of Team Red will not be happy with the findings for December 2020.

The data from Mindfactory shows sales by generation and tier. In the month of December, 15% of the chips sold by the retailer were Zen 4/Ryzen 7000 (Raphael), 13% were Zen 3/Ryzen 5000G (Cezanne), and 70% were Zen 3/Ryzen 5000. Zen 3 chips made up as much as 80% of Mindfactory's sales.

Mindfactory sold more Zen 3 chips than Zen 4 did, and the difference is stark.

This is only data from one retailer, and the picture may be different elsewhere. It won't be much of a comfort to the company that the Zen 4 chips are selling so poorly just three months after launch.

Why is Zen 4 struggling?

It doesn't appear that Intel is suffering the same problem asAMD. More than half of Intel's December sales were of the latest Raptor Lake chips, compared to less than half of the previous ones.

Why did Zen 3 have a huge lead over the latest generation of processors? Zen 4 was launched in September of 2022, while Zen 3 was launched in November. Zen 4 hasn't eaten into the sales of its predecessor.

That doesn't explain the problem that is being faced by the company. The launch of Intel's Raptor Lake was later than Zen 4 and yet the company seems to have had little difficulty convincing customers to upgrade.

The use of expensiveDDR5 memory and a lack of affordable compatible motherboards are some of the reasons why the new chips fromAMD incur higher costs than the old ones. People might not have pulled the Trigger on Zen 4 because of the bigger costs.

There was some good news for the company. The Zen 3 5800X3D, 5600X and 5800X were the top-selling Zen chips, followed by the Intel Core i5 12400F. The most popular Zen 4 chip is the Ryzen 7 7700X, which is ranked 12th in the world.

Both AMD and Intel are set to unveil updates to their chip ranges at CES 2023, with 65W Ryzen 7000 non-X chips from AMD and 65W 13th-generation Intel Core non-K processors set to be announced. AMD must be hoping its new chips will provide a much-needed boost to help revive Zen 4’s fortunes.
