Ken Block, the co- founder of Hoonigan and DC Shoes, died in a snowmobile accident on Monday. He was older than 50.
Block's death was confirmed by Hoonigan in a statement.
"It's with deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block died in a snowmobile accident today," the statement said. Ken was an icon. A father and husband is most important. He will not be around anymore.
The skateboard brand DC Shoes was co- founded by Block. After selling the company, Block went from marketing executive to one of the most well-known names in the sport. Five years after getting behind the wheel of a rally car, he became a podium threat and a five-time X Games medal winner.
In 2008, Block posted the first of 10 Gymkhana videos to YouTube, which featured him stunt driving, drifting and creatively interacting with his environment, and almost broke the internet. His Hoonigan YouTube channel became the most watched in the history of the sport.
Ken was a legend for taking a vision and making it a reality. Steve Arpin is a teammate of Block's in the Nitro RallyCross series. The best parts of Ken were found if you knew him. He created opportunities for anyone who wanted to work for him. He was everything this world needs more of, and he did a lot of cool things on the side.
An avid action sports enthusiast, Block was an ambassador for the industry and a family man who raced the American Rally Association Championship with his wife, Lucy, and their 16-year-old daughter, Lia.
Ken was thrilled this year. "He was happy to be racing with Lucy and to have his daughter racing and to have his kids at most of the races." It's devastating that few people get to the point in their lives where everything comes together.
