The top-ranked Boilermakers failed to convert on their final two chances as Rutgers stunned them 65-64 in West Lafayette.
It's the second year in a row that Steve Pikiell's team has knocked off a top ranked team. The Scarlet Knights needed a half-court buzzer beater to beat a top-ranked team.
It was in front of the 49th consecutive sellout crowd that Rutgers did it.
"You need everyone on the team to win on the road," Pikiell said. Everyone was prepared to chip in.
Spencer had 14 points and Paul had 16 points.
We are aware of what is coming. Matt Painter said that Rutgers did not shock them. If war were to break out, we would stop by New Jersey and pick them up.
Edey overcame early foul trouble to finish with 19 points and 10 rebound for the Boilermakers. It wasn't enough to finish off the amazing second-half rally. New Mexico is the last team in the division to remain perfect.
Painter wants his team to be tougher than they were. Clean up the sloppiness first.
Rutgers was in control of the game most of the night and held off the Boilermakers in the second half. Brandon Newman's tie-breaking 3-pointer gave the Boilermakers a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The Scarlet Knights scored 10 points in a row to take a 62-57 lead. Edey grabbed the rebound after Mulcahy missed a short jumper and the Boilermakers called timeout to set up the go-ahead 3.
Newman missed a 3 after Spencer made his 3. The Boilermakers were unable to get the ball to Edey for a final shot after Rutgers turned it over on an inbounds play.
Pikiell said that Spencer is not just a shooter. He leads the league inSteals and he does a lot for us. He said, 'I'm making that.' He is a very confident child.
In the Pikiell era, the Rutgers have defeated 14 ranked opponents and upset a No. 1 team for the first time in school history. Rutgers is in the NCAA tournament for the third year in a row.
Pikiell said that the league is the best in the country. It's a long, long season.
The painter said yes.
He said that the league is difficult. Different teams pose different problems.
