The overheating issue that has been afflicting some graphics cards seems to be related to the orientation of the card within the computer.
Roman Hartung, a popular overclocking expert, shared a video on his YouTube channel, der8auer, that showed some interesting results from his research. If the graphics card is installed with a vertical orientation, the cooler it is, the more it will run.
Hartung said that no matter how the card is installed, it still gets throttled. This led to more experiments to see if there is a solution to the problem that doesn't require the card to be returned.
The card was mounted upside down to see if gravity was pulling the cooler away from the graphics card. The results were the same and the RX 7900 XTX still got hot after a few minutes. Hartung dove into a few other details that did not work out.
If true, the theory that there might be a defect in the vapor chamber is more problematic than previously thought. Vapor chambers take advantage of the phase change of water boiling to become vapor before it cools. Vapor chambers quickly transfer heat from high- performance electronics.
Four reference cards were used to allow for some variation. Scientists rely on hundreds or thousands of samples in order to get the best results. The overheating issue will be identified and corrected by the company that is in the best position to do so.
We will have to wait and see if an official recall is in the works after the company responded to the complaints. There have been overheating issues with the latest generation of high-powered graphics cards.
