The most valuable type of currency in the points and miles world is transferable points. Their flexibility is what makes this possible. You can transfer points to various flight and hotel partners with rewards credit cards.

This can be useful if you want to reduce the number of points or miles you redeem for an award. If you want to book the best option for the lowest price, you can use your rewards to do so.

Learning how to transfer your credit card rewards can be an important step if you want to increase your travel game.

When you should transfer points, and which airlines and hotels partner with each program, here is a guide.

Why are transferable points so valuable?

It's possible to use your points to book travel when you want. You can only redeem your AAdvantage miles on American and its partners if you have a lot of them. If you have a large amount of Chase Ultimate rewards points, you have many more options. There are just a few.

Points can be transferred to the World of Hyatt for luxurious hotel stays or used to cover tours and activities on your trip.

When should you transfer points?

There are so many ways to use your points, it's hard to decide. It can be a lot of work. While you shouldn't consider your loyalty program account balances as long-term investments, you should ensure that you spend your points just like hard- earned money. It's important to know when to transfer points to partners and when to redeem them.

There are a number of ways to redeem your points. They can be purchased through the travel site specific to the bank, or you can transfer your points to a frequent flyer program and book flights based on that program's award rates. Your end goal is the same, but the costs can be vastly different.

Capital One miles

JOHN GRIBBEN/THE POINTS GUY

Capital One was the first to enter the market of points and miles. Capital One cards have always been known for their simple, fixed-value award options, but the issuer added over a dozen transfer partners to some of its most popular cards.

Almost all of Capital One's transfer partners were moved to a1:1 ratio. The Capital One Lounge at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport opened around the same time as the Capital One Venture X rewards credit card.

The airlines that are currently available as transfer partners are listed below.

Capital One has a couple of hotel transfer partners.

  • Accor Live Limitless (2:1).
  • Choice Privileges.

Several transfer bonuses were run by Capital One. One transfer bonus was used to book flights for American Airlines that would have cost over $1,000.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

THE POINTS GUY

American Express has more cards than Chase, but Ultimate rewards points are still worth a lot. Due to the issuer's 5/24 rule, many travelers can't open new Chase cards, but many argue that Ultimate rewards is the best. The points can be transferred to 11 airline partners.

Three hotel loyalty programs are available.

  • World of Hyatt.

  • Marriott Bonvoy.

Here are the cards that can be used multiple times.

Two small-business cards and two personal cards are included in the Ultimate rewards program. If you want to transfer points from those cards to partners, you have to have one of the three premium cards with an annual fee linked above.

Citi ThankYou Rewards

The ThankYou rewards program has a currency that can be converted into another currency. You can still get great value from your points by using alliances and partnerships. You can use a Star Alliance program to fly on United, a Oneworld program to fly on American or a Sky Team program to fly Delta. There's a reason why one writer thinks it's the mostunderappreciated flexible currency out there.

The program has airline transfer partners that have a ratio of 1:.

One hotel partner has a better transfer ratio than the other.

  • Choice Privileges (1:2).
  • Wyndham Rewards.

Transfer bonuses have been offered for a number of the programs.

There is only one card that can transfer to all of these programs. You have the full transfer benefits if you are still holding on to the Citi Prestige Card.

You can combine your Citi ThankYouRewards points into a single account for select products to convert your fixed-value earnings from your cards.

The Points Guy did not collect the information for the student card. The card issuer did not review or provide the card details on this page.

For maximum value, you can redeem Citi ThankYou points.

Bottom line

It can be difficult to earn and burn points, and that is one of the reasons why the point currencies from Amex, Bilt, Capital One, Chase and Citi are so popular. One of the most important ways to extend the value of your rewards is to transfer your points to airline or hotel partners. You are not locked into a rewards program when you need to book last minute.

It may take some time to do so, but when you can take trips on Singapore Airlines' A380 suite, ANA's Room business class or British Airways' first class, it makes all of the effort worthwhile.

If you transfer your points to a loyalty program, it won't be back to normal. Your points or miles will be returned to the airline or hotel program, not the credit card currency.
