Danny Cowley was sacked by Pompey after a nine game winless run left them nine points from the play-offs.

His brother and assistant have both been fired.

Kenny Jackett had been replaced by two former coaches.

They led Pompey to an eighth-place finish in 2020-21, but missed out on the play-offs.

The decision to part company with Danny and Nicky was a difficult one.

Danny and Nicky have given everything to Pompey, working so hard inside and outside of the training ground with a determination to bring success, not just to the football club, but to the city of Pompey and the wider community.

Cowley and his brother were in charge of Pompey in 97 matches and they won 42 times and lost 28 games.

The pressure was on to make the top six and push Pompey back to the second tier after 11 years away.

After missing out on a top-six finish for the next two seasons and only winning once in their past 14 League One games, the club's owners have decided to part ways with them.

With 24 league games still to be played, we will focus on delivering the targets we set for this season.

Immediately, the search for a new coaching team will begin.

This season began well for the Cowley brothers, with Portsmouth joint top of League One at the end of September

Danny Cowley's big break came when he was appointed as Lincoln City manager in May 2016 with Nicky as his assistant, having guided Braintree Town to a historic third place finish in the National League.

The Cowleys guided the Imps to promotion from the National League and League Two in their three full seasons in charge, as well as an FA Cup quarter-final againstArsenal.

It led to them being some of the best-regarded young coaches in the English Football League and they eventually moved to Championship side Huddersfield Town, who were 23rd in the Championship, having just been demoted from the premier league.

Despite keeping the club up, they were sacked within 10 months.

The pair took over at Fratton Park and won their first four games in charge.

In their final eight matches, Pompey won two and lost two.

A run of seven wins in eight and six wins in seven was counterbalanced by a run of one win in 13 and six and five games.

Pompey lost at Ipswich Town on October 1st, but they started the season well.

The Cowley brothers have lost their jobs because of just one league win since then.

'No-one expected sacking so soon' - Analysis

Andrew Moon is a commentator for the radio station.

The players and the media who cover the club were not expecting Danny Cowley to lose his job so soon after the New Year's Day defeat.

Michael Eisner made it clear that he is an owner who will be patient with managers and that he stuck with Kenny Jackett for a long time.

Cowley received a strong endorsement from the chief executive in an interview just before Christmas.

The recent form of Pompey is terrible. The goal for the season was for Pompey to finish in the top six.

Inside and outside the dressing room there is a belief that the squad can achieve that goal.

If that view is correct, there are 24 games left to be played.
