Gunmen in armored vehicles attacked a state prison in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, killing 10 guards and four inmates.
Various armored vehicles arrived at the prison and attackers opened fire on the guards. There were at least 24 inmates who escaped.
State police and soldiers regained control of the prison. The prosecutor's office said its personnel were looking into the matter.
The streets of Juarez were ravaged by violence in August that left 11 people dead.
Two inmates were killed inside the prison and gang members began shooting up the town, killing four employees of a radio station who were doing a promotion at a restaurant.
In some Mexican prisons, authorities only maintain nominal control, which leads to violence. In places like Juarez, there are places where rival gangs fight each other.
According to the state prosecutor's office, municipal police were attacked and captured four men after a chase. Two people were killed in an SUV.
