Most of Utah's world-class skiing is less than an hour's drive from the airport. There are 10 such resorts in the vicinity, spread across the famous Cottonwood canyons.

Utah is said to have the greatest snow on Earth, thanks to its light, dry, and fluffy snow, as well as several resorts that record over 500 inches of annual snowfall. Utah is home to the largest resort in the nation and is a great place to ski or snowboard.

Picking the right Salt Lake area ski resort can be difficult. According to online reviewers, all of these resorts have a 4.5 or higher rating. They are easy to access, affordable, and family friendly.

Which resort is the best for you? We have a list of the best Utah has to offer.

1. Big Cottonwood Canyon

It's the best all-around value.

One of the first and oldest ski resorts in the state is located just 40 minutes from the airport, and it has remained one of the best for more than 70 years. It's both awesome and affordable, with beautiful spacious runs between tall trees, and $90 lift tickets with kids 10 and under skiing for free.

With 500 inches of annual snowfall across fantastic terrain for all levels, you would be foolish to turn your nose up at this place.

The similar-sized and snow-laden Solitude is next door. It is one of the least visited resorts in Utah, except on days when other resorts' roads are closed. This isn't an ideal place for beginners, but lots of fun for everyone else with lift tickets.

If you want to get to Big Cottonwood Canyon, you can either drive, take a public bus, or take a ride up Big Cottonwood Canyon road.

2. Little Cottonwood Canyon

It's best for serious skiers.

Little Cottonwood Canyon is within 45 minutes of the airport and has two of the nation's top ten resorts with the deepest snow on the planet. Little Cottonwood is too steep for most beginners and intermediates.

Excellent on-site lodging, a terrific tram, and big amounts of challenging runs are what you'll find at Snowbird. Skiers and riders will love Snowbird because of the amount of snow it has.

Alta is the first resort in all of Utah and it's accessible for intermediate skiers. Snowboarders can ride down the mountain via the connecting top access from Snowbird, but not on the Alta lifts.

Alta's lift tickets start at $120 per day, while Snowbird starts at $130 per day. Both are full of powder.

You can take a public bus up Little Cottonwood Road to either Snowbird or Alta if you want to.

3. Park City Mountain Resort

It's the best for families, nightlife and the most terrain.

Out-of-staters love skiing here. Park City Mountain Resort is the most popular and expensive resort in Utah. The new Park City has 341 runs and 35 lifts since it merged with the Canyons Resort.

The night life at Park City Mountain Resort is even better than at other resorts, which is a big draw for visitors. You can stay on the Canyons side if you want to avoid the crowds.

It's possible to get to Park City Mountain Resort by driving east up I-80, then south on 189, which leads to the other resort.

4. Deer Valley

The best resort for luxurious living.

Deer Valley resort is located on the opposite side of Park City and is the best resort in Utah. Deer Valley has the bestomer runs that are wide and lined with people who can help you find your way. Some of the best restaurants in the state are located there.

Deer Valley probably isn't a good fit if budget, exciting terrain and snowboarding are important to you. Lift tickets are more expensive than overnight rates. It's an excellent place to ski, with nearby access to the same nightlife that Park City Mountain Resort has.

You can get to the ski resort from Salt Lake International Airport.

6. Snowbasin Resort and Powder Mountain

It's best for skiers who like to avoid crowds.

The Snowbasin Resort is located north of Salt Lake and has three terrain parks. It has an average of 300 inches of snow annually. Powder Mountain gets 500 inches of snow, which is more than Little Cottonwood's total. This is a popular out-of-the-way spot for snowhounds.
